They've just skyrocketed out of control...I'm trying to find a flight to London from LAX (aug5-15) and it's $1300 and up... just a year ago this time I paid $850 for a RT, yes, I know this is high season but $1300 bucks is a RIDICULOUS cruel joke!
Actually you can get a ticket today for $1136. If you take out the airport fees/taxes (which are not the airline fees) then it would have been $983. Also dont forget last years fuel contracts are hitting now so the airlines are now paying nearly double the current rate for the next few years. Your best chance on pricing will be American based airlines. Use the link above and you will see that EU based airlines are on average $1600 RT.
K372, that's a good, factual article and I've done and continue to do everything it suggests; I even once booked a package to Hawaii because it was the only way I could get decent airfare from Denver.
You *are* looking at high season, but ITA showed me $1150 on Delta for early-to-mid August travel, LAX to LHR and LGW.
Skyscanner came up with $1200 on US Airways. I know this is small comfort.
It is ridiculous compared to last year, but that's the way it goes.
I'm glad we went to Europe in 2009 because I don't think we're going to make it there in 2010, unless I find a really good deal.
At the very end of the article, it mentions that when you see a deal you have to jump on it. This is absolutely true. I really don't care for Twitter, but if you follow airlines and search engines you are the first to know about special fares. Example: the day that USA beat Algeria in the World Cup, Lufthansa offered $80-off fare discount vouchers to Europe. It was on Facebook, too--but that's not as instantaneous as Twitter.
They were all gone very quickly.
LAX to London is 5456 miles. At $1300 it comes out to 24 cents per mile. How is that a ridiculous cruel joke?
It costs me more than that to drive to work every day.
It's actually 12¢/mile because that fare was round trip.
And I agree a car getting 30 mpg burns through 10¢ per mile in gas alone, not even counting mx, depreciation, insurance, etc. Oh and it would be impossible to make the trip in a car, but if you did it would take you 11 days driving 16 hours day at 60 mph to do it, and you'd have hotel and food costs unless you slept in your car. Certainly worth the $200 premium over driving your car (gas only costs).

That does seem high, especially for such a highly competitive route. Where did you find that fare?
