I have never done this. So Im curious would you get a flight if you just showed up at the airport with no booked tickets and booked a flight right then and there to where you need to go?

Has anyone done this?

I've done it, and been able to buy a ticket, but paid a HUGE premium for not booking in advance. Don't try to pay in cash for a last minute ticket or you'll be subject to a ridiculously thorough security screening.

Many, many years ago you used to be able to get great deals this way, as the airlines would sell the unsold seats to "standby" passengers at greately reduced fares. It doens't work that way any longer though.

With the kind of service companies offer to passengers, I consider myself lucky when the flight is not overbook and I even manage to board, even if I have a ticket!

Our last 4 flights were overbooked and they were looking for volunteers to go on the next flight. I wouldn't take that chance, since there's a very slim chance you'd get on a flight if you wait to buy at the airport.

You can, just buy it with a credit card and it will cost a lot of money.

Air Tran Airways has a program that if you are a student you can fly stand by for $70 on shorter flights and $89 on longer flights. So its possible and can be done.

Few times, on PeopleExpress you payed onboard & Eastern Airlines ran the moonlight express?? real cheap tickets on overnight flights, They had chartered there cargo space to Airborne Overnight Mail and Passengers were just added money.

Post 9/11 one time i need to go on biz trip at last minute, and was litterly asked to go to airport on my way to work. Paid with Corp CC, but was flagged Secondary Screening. Airfare also cost two arms and one leg.

I did that one time, and I was never charged a premium for it on Southwest.

Actually you most likely were, because Southwest has a limited number of inexpensive tickets, and when they are gone, they are gone.

I have on several ocassions purchased a ticket just hours before the flight. If you are paying out of your own pocket it sucks. If traveling at company expense, often the only coach fare left is full fare, which often puts you in first class.
