I loved it , the scenery was awesome and the Icelandic people really friendly but IMO it's fantastic only for a few days ( short break etc..) as I would get bored really easily. I like places with lots of museums. theatres and interesting architecture and though I also love stunning scenery there is so much volcanic landscape I can take. Reykjavik is trendy, very young and better if you like clubbing and drinking a lot ( not that great for me). It's incredibly expensive though ( a LOT worse than Europe, including London) but there are some great restaurants and bars. I would not recommend the Icelandic delicacies of rotten shark's meat or ram's testicles though ! Really gruesome ... The hot lagoon is lovely especially in winter and if you really want to explore the rest of the country I would recommend you either hire a 4X4 or use a specialised company. Enjoy.

Agree with Moose. Also, in Keflavik (very close to Reykjavik, on the ocean), where there's an airport & military base, you'll find Americans who are there (sometimes with children) as their spouses are in the service. Many of them are starved for conversation, particularly someone from back home. There are several IC yahoo groups, but none too active. One I belonged to just closed, due to little participation in IC events (meaning in IC, not in the US). If you could somehow connect with a family there, you may find it more enjoyable to have someone give you a tour, share a dinner or at least, tell you where to go & what to do.

It is horrifically expensive. April-Oct are the best, but most expensive times to go as the weather is mild & there are fun twilight activities - horseback riding, midnight golf. If you choose to speak no IC, I'd suggest sticking to the capital, although many IC's speak some English, even if just basic. I'd learn a bit & can send you a link for a neat page of basic greetings/words in a PM.

Wholeheartedly agree w/Moose on the tour or jeep (1st time around, I'd opt for a tour company) & the blue lagoon is a must. I love the capital for the nightlife & plentiful paved roads & agree that the people are most friendly & welcoming. You must go, at least once. Pick the right partner to tag along & there are package deals available if you search online or go to your travel agent. AAA had a special in recent months.

Have fun. Gothan dag "Good day"... VV

Spent 3 days at NAS Kevlavik but never got the chance to go off base. Sigh...wish I'd had. We stopped there while ferrying aircraft to the U.S. and were on "weather hold" so we couldn't stray very far...

The Keflavik AFB closed in 2006. No more American troops in Iceland.
