Only for a thin child.

Yeah, I'd give up my seat if a child needed 'A' seat, as in ONE, SINGLE, SEAT. I would not feel so obliging if the person needed two seats because of their size. I didn't shove fatty foods into their months for years and prevent them from getting any exercise. I shouldn't have to give up my seat for a 100 lb roll of fat to take up my seat while the bulk of the fat person sits in the other seat.
I think the airlines did it because, as a minor, they would have to pay someone to watch the minor until they could put her on another flight.

At 14 the 'child' can fly alone, Im sure this was not a Unattented Minor They board 1st with lots of paperwork. The FA would have seen them then and the Standby would not have been boarded. But I would also bump the Adult (and she wasn't bumped) she was on standby. For a 'Child' the libility for SW if they bumped the 'child' is huge. If the later flight is canceled what then. A 14yo can not be checking into a hotel alone.

So a 14 year old and her parents are so self indulgent that they can't see, or admit, that their kid is a mass of fat and figure they can't fit in one seat? They've had to have run into this in restaurants, movies, etc. I have no sympathy for any embarrassment this person may have received, and little for someone who got bumped when flying standby.

Ez'r solution... 'Squeeze chute' at entrance to airport (works for cattle )
Squeeze chute - Google Search

If your body can't slip through, you don't go (must take C-5 transport plane) http://sci2.esa.int/hubble/webcam/images/Dcp_1053.jpg
Have an adjacent 'squeeze chute' for luggage. If luggage is too heavy or big it gets kicked out and sent to the 'shredder', that way you don't have to bother carrying it home

Need any other solutions? Farm kids have lots of ideas from spending countless hrs driving tractors at 3 mph.
