You know what I've found common? The traveler who thinks he knows everything and has been seen everything doesn't know **** and ain't seen ****.
I'm not the OP here. How does one discuss "representing your country abroad" without referencing geo-politics and the pre-existing global sympathies about your own country? It was Roger who brought up the "thriving democracies"---I just responded.

Thank you for teaching me that people who stay home and watch Fox News are the ones who really have a corner on geopolitical intelligence and what other countries are really like. From now on, I shall wisely ignore the tinfoil-hatters who have actually been there.

When one lives in seven underdeveloped countries, getting by in them all on a local worker's budget, I guess it's pretty hard to know the **** and see the **** that one would be exposed to by taking the airport limo to the five-star hotel or the exclusive beach resort and ordering from room service and really understanding the culture. So I guess I don't know ****.

He tried to bring politics into a thread about Anne Frank - the guy has no tact or class, just ignore him.

Really? I forgot that one. Can you link to it? That would really be shameful. Nobody would ever use the holocaust or any aspect of it to make a political point.

It was the one about what she would have looked like at 80 years old using age progression technology so it wasn't about politics but you tried to make into that. If you really want me to link to it, I will but it makes you look pretty foolish because you tried to bring up a completely different historical event and got your facts horribly wrong about it.

What Anne Frank would have looked like at 80 y/o.

You're right, I did not recall at the time that the Vietnamese girl was still alive, so I had that fact wrong. Maybe Ann Frank was the lucky one, not to have had to spend a lifetime remembering what horrible monsters had done to her. For (may I remind you) political reasons.

Anyone who uses a holocaust victim to make a point has already politicized it, and opened the door to further discussion of all aspects of it.

The context of it was already discussed and settled in another post. Try to keep up.

Nobody suggested that, but fight that straw man and live on and rule with your "I'm the cool older poor loser guy who's been around the word and thinks I'm cooler than other Americans" ethos you love to stamp on every thread.

THat's the beauty of it, it's always the dumbest who doesn't realize how dumb they are. Many people in here who have backpacked thru third world, communist countries just like you have laugh at your silly dismissal of others as taking limos. Be proud as the old bitter guy who likes to displace that onto everyone else. No Americans but you understand the world, none eat anything but pizza yeah yeah, you are so unique we should bow to your courage and worldly knowledge.
