USAir runs a lot of direct flights to the Carribean out of Charlotte. You could either make the drive up or take the 45-minute flight up to Charlotte and go from there.

We ending up booking from Sat-Sat. We would have preferred staying 10 days, but the flight hassle wasn't worth it. We found out Delta does still have limited direct flights from ATL-SXM, but only on Saturdays. Their schedule changes once the winter tourist season starts up.
