There is a symbolic clue in the picture, that relates to what the monument is in reference to.

It looks sort of remote - an octagonal building with a gyroscope kind of thing on top - makes me think of science/geometry/space - like astronomy - Galileo and Copernicus. Am I on the right track?

Yes, you are on the right track. All of the other guesses by other posters are are wrong. Astronomy would be the closest of those disciplines.
