No front plates in this state. Yes, the clue is the state flag. It is closer to Texas than to Iowa.

Another clue. The school itself is not particularly notable, but it is the alma mater of a well know American, who brought some measure of honor to the school even when he was a student there.

Oklahoma (pale blue field on flag) is correct. But not Will Rogers. Someone more recent than that, who died in his 60s.

You're thinking right. It is a sports figure, who attended this high school in Oklahoma.

That's it. I always watch, when I go through small towns, for signs of their famous sons. When I was driving into Commerce, I saw ahead of me a sign with a basesball player on it, and I thought, there it is. When I got closer, the sign said "Commerce, 1997 Girls Class-B State Softball Champions". No mention of Mantle. But I got a really good pizza at the convenience store in Commerce.

Well, two hours later and still no stumper, so here's one. The interesting question is why is there no snow on the mountain? I don't know (honestly) whether that is a clue or not, and I can't explain it for this location, either.
