Landing at John Wayne Airport, Orange County, Ca for the zillionth time:
Once again, Lord, I'm here to thank You that we didn't land on the 405.
I love the full-power take-off and landing at John Wayne. Also, the expert way all pilots handle the combination of short runway and noise restrictions.
Well, not all pilots. I once on a flight with a pilot whose skill left a bit to be desired. The flight was staffed with an Italian pilot and crew, as well as half filled with Italian tourists whose tradition was applauding all landings then pushing their way out of the seats before the plane actually stopped.
While the pilot received the ovation from his overly appreciative passengers, I contemplated the thought of telling him that the Latin passion doesn't work on every aspect of life, and John Wayne is the airport where less is actually (and better than) more.

I've been fortunate that I've never had to fly out of SNA (John Wayne) but should I ever relocate to OC ... I just may have to I'm a wimp when it comes to takeoff but can deal with it if it's done normally.

I used to fly out of SNA weekly. I really did not think that it was as bad as everyone here thinks. The pilots generally explain exactly what to expect so that people do not panic.
The flight that I did not like was the approach at Yuma (YUM). The runway is large enough to accommodate the space shuttle BUT the commuter flights insist on buzzing the grapefruit trees immediately off the airport. There were a couple of times where I thought we were cropdusting.
If you live in the OC, you will learn to like SNA as the drives to the other five SoCAL airports are a pain.
Will share only two initial reactions flying in and then the airport:
Madrid, Spain in the 70's: WOW as I saw the blue sea and red tiled roofs and mountains; but YIKES! when I saw military everywhere with submachine guns after I deplaned.
Belgrade, Serbia in 2005: Heart racing as I saw the hills and valleys and green topography and again the red tiled roofs; and WOW, I feel like I am home as I deplaned and walked through the very small, clean yet sterile airport knowing there is NO WAY I could get lost in it!
Bangkok - walked off the plane at midnight into 90 degree heat and 99 percent humidity with lightning striking all over the sky.
In the morning - the chaotic traffic, the smells from a thousand open air markets and restaurants, the heat, the icy smack of air conditioning when you entered a building, the monsoon rain.
Man that was a great vacation! Loved every minute.
LOL, Add to that the surreal experience of elephants walking up and down the main roads.
The next morning, I went to the spa at the hotel and got a pedicure, the girl doing my toes asked where I was from and I told her I was from California.... she sighed " oh, I'd love to go there, so exotic! "

Yikes, I hate John wayne.
One year, we flew out at Christmas. Spent forever on the tarmac waiting to take off. Then we drove around forever...... seriously, I thought we were looking for the onramp to the interstate and the pilot was going to drive us to Minneapolis. The the pilot came on and said "some of you might be wondering why we are driving around on the tarmac, it's because we're overweight and we're trying to burn off some excess fuel so we can take off"
