I almost flew to Quito, Ecuador for the weekend. I get a weekly email from a couple airlines and they had the sale for $350, but it was a 'two day' trip -leave Sat 5pm, combeback Tuesday 6am. I didnt like those times for a 5 1/2 hour flight.

Anybody gone on a long weekend trip, say 4 hour or more in the air? DO you feel its worth it?

Everything is 4 or more hours away from San Diego it seems, esp. since 90% of the time a layover is needed. I've done long weekends in NYC, Chicago, NOLA, Miami and many others. However, with the times you listed, I wouldn't do it. I usually leave late Thursday night or very early Friday morning and stay til Monday or sometimes Tuesday. That's way too long of a flight for just 2 days at the destination.

Airlines used to have holiday weekend fares. Twice, my wife got really cheap fares on Memorial Day. She needed to go one-way and bought round trip, Miami to Detroit, for about $75, flew Sunday. The return portion had to be used Monday, but she didn't want to go back. Did the same thing another Memorial day, Milwaukee to Traverse City, which would normally cost almost as much as Quito.

Do they still do that? I think these were on American A.

That's a great mileage run if you are getting close to hitting the next level of elite status on that airline.

Last year my husband and I flew literally to the most opposite corner of the continental states on a Thursday and came home on a Monday. Our ultimate destination involved an additional four hours each way in a rental car on top of the 16+ hours of r/t air travel. We met up with friends, had a fantastic time, and would do it again without hesitation!

I just heard something on the radio about how there wouldn't be as many fare sales because airlines had cut back on routes and had fuller flights. Don't know how true it is, just what I heard.

Before marriage and young kids/dogs that was my favorite thing to do. Always tried to stretch the time out at the destination though - on really short notice through one of those emails, we got a trip to the caribbean from the west coast, via Miami. 10 days hotel, free breakfast, and airfare for 750 total. (for both) Unheard of!!

We just did a long weekend trip but the flight was short (only two hours each way.)

As Annerk says, a lot of people would do something like the Ecuador trip just for the mileage. I saw that Quito fare last week and I did (very briefly!) think about it.

My husband has done trips like this for business (a 2-day Tokyo trip comes to mind), but we've never done it for pleasure.
For me, the money saved is s not worth it to fly that far to spend such a short time.

In my case, I'm going to need a mileage run this year. If the times wrere better or a third day was involved I would have done it. I'll keep looking.

Gisela I think you are correct most flights I've been on in the last year have been 95%+ full.

In January 2000, my travel agent phoned me and said he had one week Detroit to Cancun, $99 RT, including one night in a Detroit hotel and 3 nights of free parking at Detroit airport. We grabbed our binoculars and our Mexico bird book, jumped on the flight, and headed straight from Cancun airport into the jungle. Never saw the ocean.
