My question is how do you "opt out" as some in here said they do? Does that mean you don't go through either the scanning or the groping?

Na we wish. It means you're opting out of the scanner, for the groping. It's in hopes that the invasive pat downs are so bad nobody will consider them anyway. I read they want to embarrass people into not doing the pat-down, so it's more like you really don't have an option. Neither is good. *shakes head*

Simply say "I opt out" to a TSA agent.

The TSA will loudly yell "opt out" to embarrass you. Then, you will be subjected to a fully body patdown.

In California, the San Mateo district attorney has directed his sheriffs to arrest any TSA agent who touches your private parts; a misdemeanor over the clothes, felony charge under the clothes.

Hopefully, other DA's will step up soon.

You will have to request they change gloves - and I highly recommend that everyone do that, for both health reasons and to disrupt them. You can request a private pat down as well.

Do request new gloves, that's a great idea.

Do NOT request a private patdown. It will be much more intrusive, and you will want witnesses in case of sexual molestation.

Most night clubs use wands anyway. Maybe a pat down in the pocket area, that's just about it.
The chances of some being able to smuggle explosives in their private parts, is about the same as a man landing on Venus.....go screw the patdown in the private parts (at least the lower parts)...

I'm going to be going to and from New York a few times in the next couple of months and I will also opt out of the scan. I don't really care that some stranger might look at a picture of me practically naked, I just fear that a few years down the road there will be a resounding "OOPS" and an apology issued for underestimating the effects of the scanners.

I'm not a fan of the patdown either, but I'll suck it up and deal with a moment of discomfort since there does not seem to be another option at the moment. I imagine the poor person having to get all up in everyone's business is more uncomfortable than I am. I know that half the people I see in the airport I don't even want to share a bench with, much less have to touch. Gross...

I read in the NYT today that the mayor is asking the NYC airports (JFK, La Guardia) to have the TSA OPT OUT of doing either! I also heard that about five states are having the TSA OPT OUT of this as well. Might explain my experience flying over the past few days and going through two different airport securities and not witnessing this Mandatory scanner or pat down thing going on.

Yet another reason for me to fly out of NYC (JFK) next summer, in addition to finding the cheapest flight among nationwide airports to my destination.
