I'm an Australian who has really wanted to go to the USA since I was about 5 years old, and it still hasn't happened yet. We're planning a trip for next June, so fingers crossed . Nowadays I'm not even that obsessed with it, yet I still regularly (about once a week at least sometimes) of visiting the US. Do you think actually visting will 'cure' me of this ailment? Maybe it's partly because I'm constantly reminded of it on tv etc. I know in some ways it's not as magical as it seems, but in others way it still is very magical, especially stereotypical places like Manhattan or Hollywood.
Nah, I think visiting will only increase the desire to see more and more . I know the US pretty well, lived there for three years, and have been going there most years and still I am not cured.
America is a beautiful , beautiful country and it would take forever to really get to grasp with all its majestic natural wonders and the great cities like Chicago, NYC or San Francisco !
Then again for me travel is an illness and more travel seems to only increase the fever and the cure is never to be found.
I am sure you will have a blast though, enjoy it but expect to feel some frustration as to what escapes through your fingers through lack of time ! Which bit of the US will you be visiting ? How long ?
It is doubtful you will be cured since the US is huge! It sounds like you have the travel bug, not that it's a bad thing! I often think about other places, visit them, then my dreams wander to the next location. However, I admittedly love traveling.
Where in the US are you planning on going to in June?

We plan to go on a Trek America tour from west to east - LA to NY - taking about 25-28 days. I know it'll be a lot to take in, but if you want to see the world you can't see anywhere in too much detail! I'm interested in everywhere, basically; east, west, cities, wilderness, culture...I'm fascinated with both the culture and geography of the United States.
Come to San Diego, we'll show you around! Hollywood will disappoint you beyond belief. All my visitors want to go and when I take them, they can't believe what a dump it is. Homeless people everywhere, you can't even walk down Hollywood Blvd. without being harassed. As my friend said, the tv makes it look 1000x nicer!

You're "steriotypical" places are, if anything, not representative of the U.S. at all.
Hollywood is a run down area of LA in reality, and will dissapoint those that get the impreesion of Hollywood from the movies.
New York City is impressive, but it stands alone from any other city in the world. There is no other place like it in the U.S..
I've visited America as a teen and young adult (last time in ...1987, Bush I was Preident!) and I enjoyed it tremendously but recently I've read so many negative things on what the US are becoming that I dread coming back.

I don't understand this. New York City is still New York City, the museums and monuments in DC are still there, the beaches in FL and California are still lovely, the grand canyon is still grand.
