New York City
I will be in New York this February and I was wondering if anyone knows of any relatively cheap hotels in a good area close to the touristy spots.

In Midtown Manhattan you can go to the Vanderbilt Y: YMCA of Greater New York: Manhattan Hostels | Vanderbilt Rooms | NYC Hotels near Grand Central
Otherwise, I suggest hotels in Long Island City in Queens which are very short subway ride away from the Manhattan: Long Island City - Queens Hotels near New York - Book Long Island City - Queens Hotels in New York, New York | Expedia (http://www.expedia.com/Long-Island-City-Queens-New-York-Hotels.0-n6056462-0.Travel-Guide-Filter-Hotels - broken link)

I have family there, so I almost never get a hotel. However, I decided to stay directly in the city one time and used Priceline. Got the W in Union Square for $60/night. That is nowhere near what the prices on their site are. PL is very easy to use and you can generally pinpoint the hotel you'll be getting. I can't imagine using anything else. You can't even get a Holiday Inn for that price in the city!
And by tourist spots, do you mean Times Square? Stay far, far away is my advice. The subway will take you there. Union Square, Gramercy, the Village, SoHo, etc. are so much nicer and more local, I'd never stay near TS!

I honestly don't know a thing about NYC haha, would you mind giving a bit more advice about the city, it would be well appreciated.

My favorite local neighborhood, with a subway nearby is Union Square. You're just a short train ride to all the tourist destinations if you decide to do that (Times Square, Central Park, Natural History Museum, etc.) I wouldn't stay in a touristy area sine the local ones have such great restaurants and are still relatively close to the tourist spots.
That said, if you go with Priceline, check out Better Bidding to see which hotels people have gotten in what area and for what price. It will help narrow down choices.
Are you going for business or pleasure? I personally wouldn't stayi LI City, esp. if it's your first time in the city. There's something about staying directly in the city that makes the experience that much better. Is there anything in particular you're looking to do/see while there?

What other information do you need? For NYC Public Transportation information, go to mta.info | Home Page .
Also you would get more answers from people if you posted your question on the New York City bulletin board in this forum.

My girlfriend has the Harvard MUN law competition in Boston so when that is done she will go to NYC and I will meet her there. Just a quick 3-4 day trip for fun, not really too sure exactly what I am looking to see in particular, I just just walk around and go sight seeing. One thing that is a must is that I want to find a Colombian restaurant there, other than that, typical stuff that would be nice to do with a girlfriend

what do you consider cheap? do you want a private bathroom? If not there are some around $90 per night.
I stay in a hostel when there, but a few times I stayed in a very small single room with a shared bath.

Go to Eataly. I somehow missed it when I was there 4x this year! It opened up sometime this year and it's basically a giant indoor Italian market, with Italian foods and restaurants. I hear nothing but good things and can't wait to go see it! Mario Batali is behind this gem.

somewhere in the 90-110 dollar range, i dont think either of us could deal with a shared bathroom.
