I am traveling from NJ to California. I will be traveling through Virginia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, California. Any recommendations for restaurants/cafe's , attractions, local events? Please let me know.
You should have mentioned what time of year your coming west, where in California your heading too..Its a big state with lots to see and do in it and how long your going to stay..
Remember too its at least 400 miles from Los Angles to the San Francisco area...
there is a ton to see between NJ and California too..
Have a nice a trip.
I admit I like to stop at touristy joints to break up the boredom:
OK - There's a McDonalds that's built over the Will Rogers turnpike. That's kind of fun and the restrooms are clean. The Cherokee Trading Post in OK is a great place to stop for souvenirs. And the last time I was there the buffalo burgers were terrific.
AZ - You'll see several dozen bill boards with a jackrabbit. By the time you get there you won't be able to resist going into this trading post. You'll know when you are there. You'll see the "Here it is". Fun Route 66 souvenirs.
If you're taking 40 through Flagstaff: It's been snowing up there. But it's a major highway and you should be just fine.
Where are you going in Calif? That's my true area of expertise.
I am traveling first week in January 2011. Going from NJ to California
You couldnt have picked a worse time to travel, middle of winter? , most touristy stuff is closed, weather is at its worse, and if you only have a week its going to be some long days behind the wheel, hope you have good snow tires, pack an emergency kit just in case you get stuck for a while..
You may want to think about I-95south to west I-10, even then you could run into snow..

In the winter that would be the best route, anything north of that & you could be in for a nightmare..even I 10 there are parts where you could hit snow & ice
