Great trip, but I would be hard pressed to use my 'free lower 48 travel voucher' to go HOU > MSY Wouldn't even get to have a free soda (pop) and eat your SWA 'Plane-crackers'
Maybe find the most wild St Pat's day activity (Chico, CA was plenty wild for me last yr). I'm sure there are some 'ultimate' destinations in USA to celebrate 17 March.
Go to one of the most beautiful places on the planet...Carmel California. Take in the Big Sur coast, Monterey, Napa, and San Francisco as much as you can.

Great trip, we did just that recently! But, very few flight directly into Carmel so you might have to fly into a different airport. Big Sur is beautiful!

Nothing for nothing, but the OP was talking about a long weekend. Would you have them just touring around in a car all day just stopping for fuel as needed and waving at things as they drive by? Because that's about all they'll be doing if they try to visit all those places in three or four days.

We did Carmel, Monterey, Big Sur and Santa Cruz in a long weekend, just 4 days. We felt it was more than enough and didn't feel like we were in the car a lot. In fact, we spent quite a bit of time on the beach in Santa Cruz since it was close to 100 degrees that day and Carmel was in the low 60s.
SF/Napa is a several times a year trip for us so we didn't include that.

I agree, you limited your area to a reasonable one. I was responding to the person who suggested adding in SF and Napa as well.

They can do all or some of those things. I'm pretty sure the OP can figure out what they'd like to squeeze into a long weekend and what they can live without.
Thanks for all the suggestions!!!!! I'm definitely leaning toward Napa Valley. Annerk: It sounds beautiful from your description and that temperature sounds like it's exactly what we're looking for. I'm missing the colder weather living in Houston - 40 degrees at night sounds good!
I am curious about Portland too.... hmm
We don't have a specific to-do list, we just want to go to a new place and see what it has to offer.
If you do go to Napa, stay at the Silverado Resort. We go to Napa twice a year and always stay there, it's a really nice place. We've been there in March and it's not as nice as September. The grapes are on the vines in September and you can smell them as you pull up to the wineries, one of our favorite times to visit!
Also, I personally would fly to SFO only because the car rentals there are dirt cheap (think $11/day on Priceline) vs. more expensive at the other area airports. It's a short drive, we've never had an issue flying into SFO and you really cannot beat their car rental prices at the other airports.
Of course if you do go, don't just focus on Napa. Sonoma has some really good wineries that aren't as crowded as Napa!
