You can't always avoid danger pockets, but at night do be mindfull of alleys. When I find myself walking a less busy street in the dark that has alleys, I much prefer to walk on the street itself. Just be alert to cars coming up behind you.
One time, in San Francisco, I was headed back to my hotel and this kid started to follow me. I got concerned when he followed me down the side streets, because I did not want him to know where I was staying. I spotted a group of men standing around talking and went up to them as though I knew them and said something like, "Hi, how are you? I'm being followed, so I hope you don't mind if I stop awhile in hopes he'll leave." And he did.
