If you mean plushest, best service, I'd say the Ritz Carlton in Chicago. My favorite lobby to hang out in is the Grand Californian at Disneyland. Best view, El Tovar at the Grand Canyon.

I have stayed in the "Monte Rosa" and "La Sabliere" and loved both.

We do not splurge that often, but when we do, we're picky about it.
It's not enough that a hotel be plush or fancy; we've stayed in expensive places that we'll never again return to because of poor service and/or snobby staff. We want comfort, beauty and value, as well as a friendly, unpretentious staff, and an un-stuffy atmosphere.
All of these places fit our criteria.

The Palace in San Francisco (saved a bundle with Priceline, but it's worth the expense)

Hotel Gorgione in Venice

Borthwick Castle in Edinburgh

L'Ocean on l'Ile de Ré, France
