Default Driving from Philly to Wisconsin Dells tips?

Hello My family and I will be driving from Philly to Wisconsin Dells and are trying to come up with good stopping places. We will be traving with two small kids and want to do it in two days, the longest day being the first day. We have been told to avoid the more direct route through Chicago, therefore adding miles to our trip. Any advice, suggestions for stopping points, cool rest areas, rest area to avoid, any information is helpful
Thanks

you have to get past Chicago somehow...
and as the avoidance routes are even more boring than 80 is annoying...

My view is to just plan to slam right on through.
900/60mph (net elapsed road speed) = 15 hrs behind the wheel.

it's just shy of 900 miles to Madison, Wi
and not much worth stopping for until you get near there.
An overnight in a Toledo motel is as good/bad as any other place along 80.
