How come there aren't many direct/non stop flights to African countries from the USA?

What are the current non stop flights from the US to Africa available? Going to be more or less?

Flights to Africa are very expensive both non stop and connecting correct?

South Africa Airways flies direct from NYC-JFK to Johannesburg, but it does stop to refuel in Dakar, Senegal (although passengers flying all the way between JFK-JNB aren't allowed off the aircraft during the an hour & half refueling stop in Dakar).

There are some direct flights, I've been on them (ATL to Capetown with a refuel in the Canaries I think it was.
But it's all about supply and demand, and the logistical requirements of the hub/spoke system. Airlines can't fill a plane from the US to Africa every day, but they can easily fill planes going to Europe, and then from Europe to Africa.

In the grand scheme of things, since you're already suffering a really long flight and directs stop for refuel anyway is it really that much additional pain a layover in Madrid/Frankfurt/etc?

Back in highschool (about 7-10 years ago), I frequently took direct flights from NY to Lagos, Nigeria.

The cheapest way is probably to find a good direct fare to the Canary Islands (Spain), and from there, flights to Dakar are short and fairly frequent. You can even get African visas in Las Palmas.

I believe, from London, one of the cheapest Africa-bound flights would be to Banjul, Gambia, which is a popular holiday spot for Britons.

Once you're in sub-Saharan Africa, you can get around by bus, but it's incredibly grueling, and usually impossible in the rainy season. And almost impossible to get across the great Congo/Nile divide from West Africa to East/South Africa. You'll need another short flight for that, say Lagos to Entebbe.

Here is a site that addresses quite a few options with straightforward answers:

Cheap Flights to Africa - How to Get a Cheap Flight to Africa

I ran some dates on Expedia, and found that the direct JFK flight to Dakar costs several hundred dollars more than a multiple-stop booking through Europe.

When I flew to Dakar, I just flew to Las Palmas, Canary Is, which was the same price as to Madrid, and then there were several flights a week from there to Noudahibou, on the border of Mauritania and Western Sahara, but that was a long time ago, and with the world gripped by fear of almost everything, it would not surpise me if there are no flights anymore from Las Palmas to Africa. Expedia is now quoting me a fare of $1229, mid-summer RT, to Las Palmas.

In spite of what we think is progress, I'm sure that if Marco Polo today tried to get overland from Italy to Xanadu, he would give up and turn back, thwarted by red tape, restrictions, closed borders, and the absence of any roads.

Delta operates daily flight from JFK to ACC (Accra, Ghana). Other carriers service Dakar, Logos, Johannesburg or Cap Town and many north African cities with non-stop flight. Ethiopian is scheduled to start tri-weekly non-stop flight from Lome, Togo to JFK beginning july 2016. It's a matter of what city you departing from in US and what african city you going to.
