My wife and I love to travel and try to take at least one vacation trip (7 to 10 days) each year. We really like to do our own thing-and on our own schedule. The idea of giving that "decision-making" freedom to another (organization or group) is not for us. I can't imagine being stuck on a group tour with people I don't know or perhaps even like, for days at a time.

We truly enjoy planning our vacations. I spend considerable time on this City-data, and others websites (like Orbitz, Travelocity, etc.) investigating options like flights, attractions, motels, restaurants, traffic, etc. Once I develop a preliminary itinerary I run it by the Mrs. for her consideration. We thoroughly discuss the details and then "finalize" our plans. However, we usually remain flexible enough to modify the plan as we go.

One couldn't pay me to travel with a group!! No!!!! Imo, it is awful!!!!

I am yet to understand the fun of staying in a bus rushing to visit places with a bunch of strangers that have absolutely nothing in common with me - who usually entertain other travelers with the most inconvenient, obnoxious comments under the sun.
Not to mention the super-touristy, super-expensive, never-authentic dining options and the hideous knickknack stores, all beyond awful.

Part of the fun is planning trips, from the (sometimes intricate!) itinerary to basic lessons of the local language (if I don't speak it already).
