I'm 37 years old and wanted to know if anyone my age (or older) has ever stayed in any? I thought they were mainly for younger people, but not sure. Any complaints or praises?
I'm 23 and have stayed in a couple of hostels before... There were people of all ages, I don't think you'll have to worry too much about being too old. Will I ever stay in another hostel again? Probably not.. maybe it was just a bad experience, but I prefer hotels.
It depends on the hostel -- some are nicer/cleaner than others. There are a number of online sites with reviews that can help you decide whether a particular place is right for you.
(Remember that many of them have communal facilities, so you'll want flip flops or similar shoes for showering!)

I would probably only use a hostel if my stay may be brief and travelling last minute. (Thinking of DC in the fall for two days, one night)

Hostels in USA are completely useless, they are more expensive or the same price as many lower priced hotels. I'd stay in a motel six or equivlent than a hostel.

I rarely see motels in downtown areas. I know we don't have cheap hotels in downtown Pittsburgh, lol
According to the DC hostel website, they run around $45. I am not looking to stay outside the city since I don't drive.
I'm almost 60 and have stayed in hostels. The last one just a month ago. It was in Romania.

The one that used to be in Pittsburgh was on Mt. Washington. You had to take several busses to get there.
I'm 24, and I've only stayed in hostels in Ireland, so I'm not sure about U.S. hostels.
There is no age limit, though I know what you mean - a lot of college kids stay at hostels. However, a friend of mine just had her entire family at a hostel, so it's not only a college-aged thing. Also, in my stays in hostels, I saw people of many ages.
Whether they are clean or not depends on the hostel you're at. I had one that left a lot to be desired, but every other one was perfect.
You don't always have to be in a room with 10 bunk beds. In fact, every room I had in Ireland had either two single beds, or only two bunk beds - and I shared the rooms with the people I was traveling with. They had the larger rooms, but you get to choose based on how much money you want to spend.
Basically, just do a little research on the hostel before you book it. You can find out what type of rooms they offer, what the bathrooms are like, prices, and if they offer any amenities. You might even be able to find reviews, which will give you an idea of how "clean" it is. It's just like looking for a good hotel room, really.
