Travel advisories from government offices tend to be scary. I am interested in the Republic of Georgia near Russia and after reading the advisories I am scared to death! However, I also read some info that suggested that these advisories tend to be skittish and need to be taken with a hefty grain of salt. For example, I read the warnings about travel to the U.S on the Australian site and I don't think I would come here either! Have any of you gotten to where you know how to interpret them realistically? Anyone been to Georgia? I know there are parts that are off-limits but what about the other areas? They particularly mention kidnappings.

I have been to many, many countries where Americans were advised not to travel. It really depends why you are going, who you will be with and what you are going for.

Be careful, adher to any specific concerns (like most of Africa advises one to be in before dark and not to go out at night) and you should be fine.

But if you are that worried, you shouldn't go.

I agree with Dawn. If you are really worried, it won't be a good trip anyway.

If you do decide to go, be smart. Leave the expensive jewelry and stuff at home and dress like a local. Keep a low profile and always be aware of your surroundings. And BTW, that advice would serve you well traveling almost anywhere!
