I've been to Europe before... I kept my wallet on me as I normally would here and didn't take any precautions. I didn't have any problems either.

This time I'm wanting to propose, and I'm curious if I should be worried or take any precautions with the engagement ring? I'm only taking a backpack, and while going into Europe I plan to have it in the backpack and locked using the TSA locks. I'll be using that as a carry-on so it won't leave me, and once we get through security I will probably move the ring so that it is with me instead of in the bag...

I was going to take one of those leg money belts that strap on to your calf, and I thought I could keep it in there.

I'm still trying to figure out whats best? I'll be proposing after about 5 days of being there... should I keep it on me at all times or locked in the hotel safe before then? After I propose, should my girl wear it or not wear it til we are home and keep it hidden away?

I've honestly never felt there was anything to worry about in the past in Europe as long as you are aware of your surroundings and not easily distracted.... but then I read all these websites of people saying watch out, keep things hidden, this and that... just wondered what anyone else thought?

if you are worried why not take a 'fake' cheap on to do the proposing with and keep the real one at home ??

I have a 2 carat solitaire with a diamond wedding band and 3 tiffany diamond celebration rings I wear most of the time and have travelled the world wearing. I never had a problem. Its all about how you behave and where you are going to be. I wouldn't go wandering through badly lit dodgy areas - but i wouldn't do that with or without jewelry....

A friend of mine had the exact same predicament as you. He proposed to his girlfriend in the Cinque Terre in Italy. Like you he just had a carryon backpack.
I think he just kept the ring in a small envelope, inside a moneybelt that he wore around his waist.

Yeah that's the thing, I'm not really worried based on previous experiences... just wanted some thoughts. I've never had problems either...

I like the little money pouch that straps around your waist and goes inside your trousers or shorts.

even smaller than this, if you find any.

Keep it on you (in a deep secure pocket or better in a money belt), or in the room safe. NOT in a backpack. I say that because backpacks not only get stolen - but also lost, damaged, etc.

I have also heard that when carrying something like jewelry it's a good idea to keep the receipt with you but that was many years ago I heard that.
