I'm gonna be in Hong Kong for a business trip and I'm thinking of heading over to Macau for a day on the weekend and getting back by evening the same day. What I can feasibly see in 1 day there? I'm not that interested in gambling, but more in, say sightseeing around the city center. Thanks.
I, too, am not interested in the least in gambling.
Macau is historic and does have some Portuguese colonial architecture. There are the ruins of a very old church that is worth looking at. I found it interesting just to walk around, have lunch, and do a little shopping. Oh yes, I did pop inside one or two casinos just to take a look.
Macau is not Vegas, so don't get your hopes up.
In my opinion, a much, much, better day trip was to Lantau Island and experiencing the magnificent Po Lin Monastery with the colossal bronze Buddha on top of the mountain. You buy a ticket to go to the top but that includes an extremely delicious vegetarian lunch. The buildings and shrines are gorgeous and the big Buddha is very impressive ... you can go inside and it filled with fine art works relating to the life of the Buddha, 2,600 years ago.
you can do the highest Bungee in the world A.J.Hackett at Macau tower.
I never did a bungee but did this one on a whim with a friend who wanted to... IT WAS AMAZING !!! 233m / 746 ft
If you had more time I would suggest going to Macau as part of a 2-day trip to Canton or Guangzhou as I suppose it should now be called and include the local temples and countryside in that.
