Flights out of Newark will be cancelled on Sunday if this hurricane comes through, and it looks as if it will.

So what happens to cancelled flights--do they put you on the next available flight or is it up to you to find one on your own?

My daughter's been searching, but available flights before the storm are sending her off into off-the-beaten-path cities where she'd have a layover and either need to get a hotel or stay overnight in the airport and wouldn't get her there much faster than if she waits until Monday. OR takes the chance that they will send out the scheduled Sunday flights after the storm has passed.

Better to reschedule or just wait?

They will put you on next available flight, but remember with full flights it may take awhile, a couple days before she gets out. Actual airport closures from hurricane's are otherwise fairly brief as long as not much damage or power outage - a day at most, maybe less. But schedules get backed up. They will probably also let you cancel and rebook (depending on the airlines) without penalty but buying the new ticket, with no advance, might be pricey.

Thanks. They are allowing flight changes with no penalty already, but since her flight is scheduled for noon and the high winds and heavy rain are supposed to be done by mid-afternoon, we are wondering if they will just send the flight out late. She has to register at school no later than August 30th, and taking a flight on the 29th will get her there on the night of the 30th. Hopefully they've heard there's a hurricane on this side of the planet and will give a little leeway.

Thanks, although that wouldn't be that difficult an airport to get to.

I didn't realize I didn't put the destination. She's going to China--Chengdu, in the Sichuan province.

She's been trying all day. You don't even get put on hold. You get a message that the volume of calls has overloaded the system, and then it hangs up. She's going to try again overnight.

I just heard that they are closing the NY airports at noon on Saturday and haven't yet given more info as to when they are opening. You didn't by chance put it on an American Express card, they've come through with great customer service in tough situations for me.

Actually, Dogmama50, she did, and thank you. Are you suggesting she call American Express?

Anyway, we did get a little relief. The concern was that she is going to China on a scholarship, and she had to arrive at the school by August 30th or risk having the scholarship revoked. She emailed her home college's study abroad person as well as the school in Sichuan, and last night they both replied that they are not holding late arrivals against anyone because of the storm and inability to fly out from the US east coast. Now we know she has a little leeway if she can't get out yet on Monday.

You are correct that they are closing the airports at noon today to all incoming flights. They will allow outgoing flights today as long as the weather holds for safe takeoffs. The idea is to have as few people as possible stuck in the NYC-area airports.

6000 flights have been cancelled.
