Starting 8/25/2011

Thanks to some new rules issued by the US Department of Transportation:
- you shouldn't have to wait in a hot, uncomfortable plane on the tarmac anymore ( regulation requires domestic flights to return to the gate after three hours, and passengers must be provided with adequate food, water, working lavatories, and medical treatment).
- you should be reimbursed a tidy sum if you're bumped from a flight
- airlines will be required to refund those fees if your bags are lost
- airlines will not be allowed to raise your fare after you’ve purchased your ticket.
- airline fees should be prominently displayed (all fees, including baggage charges. All fees and taxes must be included in advertising).
Here's a look at the new rules and how they affect you.

Three hours is still a long time !!
Unless you are flying intercontinental, most flights are less then that, no ?

Three hours is a very long time, especially for elderly and those with small kids.

The reimbursed sum is actually not that tiny anymore:
The DOT's new guidelines force airlines to, as of tomorrow, reimburse passengers who are bumped from their flight twice the price of the purchased ticket (up to $650) unless they make other arrangements to get the passenger to their final destination within a couple of hours of the original arrival time. The longer the delay, the bigger the reimbursement: if the arrival time is delayed too long, passengers can claim up to four times the value of a ticket, up to $1300 (compared to $800 today.)

However there are not many tickets under $300, and most of overseas flight tickets start at around $1000...

Any extra leg room space will be sold as a prime seat

3 hours is still a long time. You can get from most places in the US in under 3 hours time. God help me if I'm flying to San Francisco and get stuck on the tarmac for 3 hours, I'll be on the flight longer then I would've been if I was flying to Central Europe.
