Hotel Pennsylvania is affordable and is opposite to penn station and madison square garden. other idea will be to stay at chain hotels like courtyard by marriot, holiday inn, sheraton near newark airport and take a train to NYC.

That is same area I'd recommend, there are so many restaurants (that will be cheaper than in Times Square) plus you've got all the train routes and Penn Station.

Isn't hotel pennsylvania said to be the worst hotel in NYC?

As a NY'er, I recommend this.

No way to traveling from NJ or Westchester and no need to put up with ridiculous Manhattan prices. Stay in the city, but in Queens. 15 minutes away from midtown by train...with $80-90 a night for clean, decent accomodations.

If at all possible, you might consider Feb. since the rates are so much lower. We usually stay close to Times Sq. since we like to be walking distance to theaters, Brooklyn Bridge (Grimaldis) and Central Park. We've stayed in Queens before and did NOT care for it. We're staying at the Crowne Plaza Times Sq. in Feb. for $150/night which is much less than what we've paid when we usually go in Dec. I like Broadwaybox.com for theater tickets although we've done the TKTS booth before.

Sometimes it is cheaper to buy Broadway tickets for a particular show directly at that show's theater box office on the day of the show.

Or at least the same price as TKTS, without the hassle. That was our experience with the Off-Broadway Fantasticks. Same identical price for seats on the same row, next to ours.

I would consider staying at a youth hostel in New York if you are alone or with one other person.
