MSP is a huge airport, what causes it to be so much more expensive than other airports? Are taxes in Minnesota higher or something?

It seems like flights to/from MSP are more expensive on average than other airports. Just an observation i've made.. but it seems like even delta is expensive out of there.

Typically hubs that are "owned" by one carrier are very expensive. CVG was like that as well before Delta downsized it. MSP is a former NWA hub.

Delta has a contract with the airport that they must generate a certain % of flights into/out of the airport each year. While the contract is good for the state because it ensures that Delta maintains a hub at MSP (and creates lots of local jobs), it hurts consumers because there is less competition from other carriers. It seems like Delta expands each year and takes up more space. I think they might even have their very own Delta security checkpoint now that only special Delta members can use. According to this article, Delta owns almost 80% of all gates at MSP. And let me tell you, if you live in MN and you're flying somewhere, you almost always fly Delta.

http://www.startribune.com/local/134968598.html

Quote:
Delta controls 89 percent of the gates in the main Terminal 1, which it shares with other major legacy carriers, such as United. Even when including the gates held by low-cost carriers such as Southwest at Terminal 2, the Humphrey Terminal, Delta controls slightly more than 80 percent of the airport's gates.

The MAC cites that dominance as a factor contributing to higher fares at Minneapolis-St. Paul International than at many other major airports. MSP ranked as the 11th most expensive in average domestic fares for round-trip or one-way flights earlier this year, according to U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

At Denver International Airport, United is the single biggest carrier but controls only 43 percent of the gates. Southwest and fellow low-cost carrier Frontier together hold 37 percent. Denver ranked 77th in fares.

I guess that I don't see it as Southwest is always running $59-69 OW fares to MSP out of MKE and MDW.

I have to travel through MSP semi-regularly due to work and I have noticed that it always comes with a high price tag too. Generally I have been paying about $800 to fly from the east coast to MSP. Mind you, I can routinely fly to the west coast for less than $300, or maybe $350 on a bad day.

MN has high taxes, and also because of Deltas control of most of the gates. It is expensive to fly into there.

Maybe to pay for the years and years of construction that took place there as they installed the train, changed the names of the terminals, rearranged the parking garage 107 times, moved the bus and taxi ranks, changed the location of the car rental agencies and updated the shopping/food hall?
