There are just as many tourists from other countries who take lots of pictures and use social media, it is hardly a characteristic exemplified by American tourists.
Because most people don't know much of anything about other parts of the world, and Italy is the European country best known for having historic sites and accessible cuisine.
For the record, I'd also consider Germany, the UK, Spain, France, and maybe the Czech Republic to be within the "normal" range of European states for Americans to visit. You could give us a *little* credit, heh.
Why do people always just want to go to Italy when they think of Europe?
Not moi, been to Spain (Madrid and Nearby Towns/Villages and the countryside) but I will NEVER go back Madrileños are Worse than Parisians...Wife has been to Rome and Naples and she says it's the same there.
No. 1 on my bucket list is The Island of Kefalonia in SW Greece.. One of these days !!!!!!

It is when you're obnoxious about it. "I'm in a foreign country! Ahh I'm so exited! I'm American and entitled!"

Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Greece, etc., have so much to see as well. Does anybody else also think Italy is uber predictable?
I don't know why you think "everyone" thinks of Italy first. It was #10 on my list of European countries to visit and I just made it there a couple of years ago.

Personally I think that Italy (as well as France) is too romanticized, that's why so many people seek to come here. Remember Venice which is considered the most romantic city in the world. I also thought this place was that unique but after visiting it I realised other European countries are way more interesting and have more breathtaking sights and more incredible atmosphere.

1. Ancient city - There are actual buildings there that predate christianity
2. Modern city - Trains, ubers, malls, cars and electronics everywhere
3. Language - Its far enough from English to where you are cognizant that you're in a foreign country, but shares enough vocabulary with English to where most americans can meander around without a firm basis of how to speak it
4. Culture - In elementary school we are taught that Greece and Rome are the sources from which our democratic republic was born. We learn about ancient Greece and Rome for a year or two. There are also lots and lots of famous americans with Italian heritage and you can find italian restaurants anywhere and everywhere.
5. Coasts - Americans love the beach and the coast... especially since so few of us have easy access to tropical climate beaches.
6. Bunga-bunga parties - I'm upset that Silvio never invited me to any of these.
