Does anyone know what criteria SWA uses to assign the early bird checkin?
We recently flew SWA, had made reservations 6 months in advance, and were still in B group. Just wondering how they decide. A friend suggested that may they use the # of flights you've had with SWA in the last year. I would think it should be when the reservation was actually made.
From what I understand, your boarding position is first come first serve based on when you check in. With early bird doing the auto check in for you, I'd have to say there were a lot of early bird checkins on that flight.
I believe you can check in up to 48 hours in advance. I recommend you do so. You still won't make it to the front of the line though. The early A seats are reserved for people who are not redeeming frequent flyer miles or buying cheap seats. There given to passengers who pay full price for their seats from what I understand.

I just few Southwest last week and it is definitely 24 hours ahead of time.
A1-15 are their business select passengers. A16 and on are early bird (which are done before the 24 hour mark), then at the 24 hour mark and later, it is first come first serve based on check-in.
As for the early bird, it would be the date that you purchased the early bird deal not necessarily the date you purchased the tickets. I would assume if you had early bird, there were a lot of other people that also purchased early bird.
Must be, as we purchased the tickets 6 months in advance of flying, and at the same time I purchased the early bird check in.
I did change the flight but the confirmation # remained the same as did the refund. I received a refund when I changed the flight, but the date to use it remained the original purchase date. Was just wondering, that's all.
When you changed the flight the date, for your early check-in would be the date your changed your flight, not the original purchase date. (or the day you bought the early check-in if you didn't do on original purchase), Witch ever is later.
I sometimes (begrudgingly) have to fly SW for work and my company always buys the early bird. You are NOT guaranteed A group. Usually I end up in A but twice I was in B (but something like B1 or 2).
Southwest have a thing called A-list for their frequent flyers (I think you need 32 flights a year). If you are A-listed then you are almost guaranteed to get the A group. If you are flying from a SW 'hub' like Phoenix then there may be a lot of people who are A-listed and ahead of you in the pecking order.
