Anand, a 24-year-old public relations professional, keeps a dirty little secret -- his parents proudly fill their house with mementos from hotels and restaurants around the world. Though they are well-off financially, they rely on the five-finger discount.

"My mom has to do things the right way, but she enjoys what falls into the suitcase after they go on a trip," said Anand, who lives in Boston, but is too embarrassed to disclose his parent's home.

If the hotel/motel items are disposable items,o'k.Otherwise I would not take anything. If it is actual stealing no one should get a thrill, how would you like it if service man came into your home and took something.I worked as telco repairman etc for many years and was never tempted be it business or home.

Generally speaking, if the items are marked with the hotel name and info, they're meant to be "taken". Yes its stealing, but the items were made with the intent to be removed.

I remember growing up when people smoked everywhere. Why would the Travelodge have their reservation and contact numbers printed on an ashtray that is sitting in the hotel room if it wasn't really meant to leave?

Now, sheets, linens, electronics, decor, that's just plain old theft. Marketing items, that's different.
