My advise to those who wants to visit the Philippines, skip Manila and go straight to the beaches, mountains and historical places. Now these places aren't easily accesible, you might need another 2-3 hours of land or sea transport to reach your destinations and lots of walking. Always bring along local people with you, not to protect you but mainly to make everything easy and timely.

When we went to Bohol, we just called a local guy (a tourist guide) and he arranged everything for us. He provided an SUV with a driver to send us to all the tourists places in the countryside (for whole day). The next day, a boat fetched us for whole day island hopping. We paid around $100 for both services. If you're a white, they may probably charge you a bit higher, but its fine, just go for it. You can also do that in other places say in Palawan. Go get a local tour guide with you!
