So I'm planning a summer vacation for this year and I can't seem to make up my mind. Our budget is lower than usual (around $800-$1,000) and it will just be my husband and I. We don't want to go TOO far but we want to have fun.

Here are requirements:

1. We live in East Texas, so preferably somewhere that isn't more than a 10 hour drive from Lufkin, Tx.
2. Probably not flying, it's costly, and so are rental cars.
3. We aren't into clubbing.
4. We like outdoorish stuff, but more cabin-y, we don't own camping gear or a pop-up, so amenities are great.
5. We like theme-parks and shopping type stuff.
6. I like to explore the local attractions, and sight-see.
7. Rivers/lakes are awesome, The DH loves to fish...I like photography, we're both happy.
8. We live mountain areas...and beach areas.

Anyway, Galveston is out, we live too close and will undoubtedly make some day trips. San Marcos/San Antonio is a HUGE possibility. Schlitterbahn for a day, riverwalk, zoo and nice evening dates are a tentative agenda. Maybe check out the Alamo, too.

I was also checking out Florida and Arkansas...

If you have a good suggestion please throw it out with what to visit/where to go!

Thanks!!!!

You have a lot of choices!

New Orleans, Mobile, Biloxi, Roswell, Carlsbad, Memphis. Orlando is 16 hours, but would be worth it to me.

New Orleans is great - Everyone should go there at least once. It has a great aquarium and a lovely Arts Museum with an outdoor sculpture garden. And music in New Orleans is the best. We missed the zoo but if we go again that will be a must see. Street cars are great and take you about anywhere. We stayed at "Place de Arms" right there in the French Quarter, I recommend it.

For a fun, cultural diverse, city trip my pick would be New Orleans as well. I know you and the DH are not into clubbing but Bourban street is an experience. Great food, lot's of touristy stuff to do and see and you could do a swamp tour on top of the in city site seeing. My other suggestion would be the Ozark Mtn area of Arkansas. Very outdoorsy area, so lot's of cabins, horseback riding, fishing and the Buffalo river is beautiful to go canoing on.

New Orleans is fun... And a good idea. I worry that we'll tire of the scene too quickly.

Arkansas MTS sound more like our style. We like the laid back, camping/hiking/fishing atmosphere.

I'll run both ideas by DH, along with San Antonio to see what he thinks. New Orleans didn't cross my mind, but I sure won't cross it out (though he might). LOL!

Every time I go to Oklahoma, I find it full of surprises, and I wonder why nobody goes there. Drive up to Fort Smith, Arkansas and back---one way through Oklahoma and the other way through Arkansas. Stick to the back roads, and just plan on stopping when something catches your eye.

If you like theme parks I'd say Florida.

Ya know, my DH and I were just talking about Bever Bend in OK. It really looks like our kind of place, hiking, fishing, kyacking, pet-friendly, and other outdoor activities in a fresh scene are our kind of trips.

Thanks for the tip about coming back through AK and just stopping at what catches our eye. That's the way to travel!
