Depending on your interests, you may want to consider Santa Fe. I stayed at a hostel there (with a private room) which made it affordable.

Thanks everyone, for suggestions, as I'm in the same situation as OP with few friends/family who enjoy traveling. I just wish that lodging was more affordable for solo travelers...

If you're traveling alone, try couchsurfing or airbnb.com for interesting and inexpensive (and/or free) accommodations.

I traveled all over western Europe by myself. Sometimes I'd wish I had a partner in crime, but being able to do what I want, when I want was pretty badass.

Amsterdam was the easiest to be alone. I'd go to a cafe and a table of young German folks would see I was alone and insist I sit with them. Later I'd go to a tavern and a table of English folks would insist I sit with them. Loved it.
