In general how much time does one need to be at any airport in the USA before a domestic flight (assuming one is a passenger and not a crew member)?

I check in online and only use carry on. I'm also that guy runnining through the airport I get there anywhere from 15-30 minutes early as long as it isn't ORD.

The question is really when you leave the house or office to drive to the airport. Uncertainties include: traffic, parking, shuttle to the terminal, check-in (if bags), and security. Everything after security is predictable.

It really comes down to what level of stress you are willing to accept, and how large a chance of missing your flight you are willing to accept. For me, I feel uncomfortable getting to the airport less than an hour ahead, and prefer to be early and spend the time getting a snack or buying reading material.

I know that American Airlines requires passengers to be at the airport at least 45 minutes in advance for domestic flights. I know someone who arrived 30 minutes before a AA domestic flight and didn't need to check in any baggage and found that the flight was closed.

If you do not have any bags to check and printed your boarding pass at home arriving at the airport 60mins before the flight can be enough time. Remember boarding for most flights starts 30mins before departue time. So if you flight is leaving at 11am boarding of the plane will start around 10:30am and maybe even earlier depending how large the plane is. That is why 30mins before the flight the check in is closed, they need to know if they let others on stand by list etc.. on the plane.

At a large busy airport I would say 90mins is plenty of time, incase security lines are long etc.. 90mins should be enough if you have bags too, but with checking in bags maybe 1:45mins or so both the flight.

At a smaller, not so busy airport 60mins should be fine with checking bags or not. I would never recommend less than 60mins before.

Had they checked in on line? Most airlines require you to check in (on line or in person) an hour prior to your flight time due to DHS rules, but as long as you are checked in, they don't care if you walk up to the gate just before they close the door.

But unless they complete boarding very quickly and shut the door, arriving at the gate 15 minutes before your flight isn't a problem if you've checked in online. Most carriers don't even start the boarding process until 30 minutes before flight time.

If I'm flying back and forth in the same day for a meeting and only have my briefcase, I usually wait to board at the very end--I don't need overhead space.
