I started traveling internationally after college, and it provided adventure and excitement. I learned about different cultures and new ways of thinking, and also helped me understand the lengths people go to to support their family. Good people can join the bad team if theyare desperate...this was a new concept to me, as I was young and hadn't experienced real difficulty in my life. It also made clear how lucky I am to have my family and the situation they put me in, through teh hard work of my parents, grandparents, etc. It made me realize that my job as a father was to put my kids in the best place possible to succeed, through knowledge sharing and dollars.
traveling to other countries is over rated. I came to the realization that there are just as many people in other countries traveling over here at the precise time I'm over there. It's much more efficient if I just wait here for them to show up over here and I can ask them about where they live and save my money for a big pick-up truck.
Hearing about a culture from conversation or seeing photos/movies is not the same as actually going there and experiencing it on your own.
