I'm going to be booking 2 airline tickets with miles for a mid July trip but I wanted to wait awhile to book them just in case something else comes up and I was wondering if Delta raises the points needed the closer you get to the departure date?

I think you should be fine, I'm quite sure that buying with miles should remain the same. You can wait for other responses but I think you'll be safe. If you will pay in cash, you'll definitely have some problems though.

I think closer to the departure date the amount of miles will not go up but Delta charges a booking fee for frequent flyer tickets reserved less than 3 weeks in advance of the travel date.

Today it is very difficult to use airline FF miles to get a particular day/ time. If it were me I would get tickets immediately if I found an available flight.

Oh man, Delta has 3 tiers for point usage, and they have limited frequent flyer seats available. You will NOT be fine if you wait too long, or at the very least you will be forced to use the highest tier, which means you will be using twice as many frequent flyer miles as the lowest tier. You can go to Delta.com and price it out to see what tier they have available now (wihout booking). But I would book as soon as possible.

Exactly. This is pretty much the model for a number of the major airlines.

If we are booking a trip and using miles, we generally try to do so a fair way out so we don't end up spending 30k miles per seat vs., say, 20k miles.

I worked for Delta 2 years ago, booking trips using frequent flier miles...Book as early as possible.. They only open up 1-2 seats on a lot of the flights and I have seen people try to book 10-11 months in advance and not get space....Delta is very tight on their frequent flier seats if you are going anywhere popular...

The earlier you can book it, the better off you are. There's no guarantee that seats will be available at any given time.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I thought when I looked at the seats about 6 weeks ago they were less points but they are now up to 50,000 points. We just were not sure so far out if this trip was 100% do-able. I'm looking at going from ATL to either PWM(Portland, Me) or doing a multi city (atl - bgr then pwm - atl). Seems to be the same points both ways and would save us 4 hours driving to do the multi city.
