Im going to Portugal next month. One week in the Azore Islands and one week on the mainland. My home base on the mainland will be Lisbon. I am looking for a nice mix of seeing the sites, walking through the neighborhoods, and doing a couple of day trips from Lisbon.

Any recommendations on what to see and do in Lisbon? Restaurant and cafe recommendations are welcome, particularly ones that a solo traveler will not feel uncomfortable patronizing. I feel awkward eating alone . I will not be alone on the islands, just the mainland.

I will spend one day or part of a day in Belem, and I think Sintra will definitely get one day. What is another good day trip? Is Coimbra too far? Can Cascais or Estoril be visited on the same day as Sintra since they care close by Sintra, or is there too much to do in Sintra to be able to see two towns?

Thanks for the ideas.

So jealous of you. Would *love* to go to the Azores. Some day....

My kid has taken two recent trips to Portugal and so far his favorite place is Porto. He said Sintra was quite touristy but I would still like to see it.

Last time I've been to Lisbon, I made a daytrip to Porto by train (Alfa Pendular high speed train). It takes about 2:45 by train onway, so maybe I would insert a nightstay in Porto next time.

I also liked the old castle in Lisbon and using the old yellow streetcars. I also remember a lot of great bakeries with more delicious stuff I could ever eat.

We enjoyed Sintra a lot. We traveled to Santarém and then up to Coimbra, Porto & other coastal towns.

In Lisboa & other towns we would follow the workers at lunch into the cafes & order bacalhau. We probably ate it a dozen different regional ways.

Have a great trip! Wish I were going back.
