There is something like this in Milwaukee - Dahmer's victims families protested the first tour.

I think that professor is really reaching and conflating memorials and sights of significant historic events with morbid voyeurism. The Dahmer tour Harrier mentioned might be more fitting to that kind of study. He's really missing something if he thinks the only or primary reason people feel compelled to visit places such as Gettysburg, Auschwitz, and World Trade Center - or places like the Viet Nam memorial in DC, for that matter - is because they have a gruesome fixation on death. It's important that these places are preserved and visited - not in small part so future generations can keep deniers and conspiracy theorists at bay.
