Has anyone else noticed this?

The fact that super cheap airfare is over was already obvious, but now, no matter which airfare site you hit, Kayak or whatever, you punch in your information and it is as if BookingBuddy is everywhere. Kayak is not Kayak, it is now, all together, CheapoAir, Expedia, Travelocity, Hotwire etc.
Each fare is within a couple dollars of another. The consolidators are not competing with each other.

One that still appears to be different is Skyscanner, but it is more Euro-centric.

It seems to me that hitting one of the travel websites along with the websites from airlines flying the route will get you pretty close to the best available price.

When choosing a travel website: some add on travel insurance to flights automatically, and you have to be sure to delete it if you don't want. Travelocity adds it automatically; Expedia (and no doubt others) do not.

You do know that that even though they're all independent businesses, they run almost exclusively on one software platform?

The fare run up has more to do with the CO/UA merger and reduced competition than anything else. The only thing that could help is if USAir buys AA and then drops out of the Star Alliance. If they stay with Star, the lack of competition will be much, much worse.
