Airlines are probably one of the most important industries in the world today and also one of the least profitable industries in the world.
So many airlines are going bankrupt and it is one of the most cutthroat industries out there.. so why do the governments throw such high taxes on them?
I honestly don't know and it is more of a question than me saying the government should do one thing or another, but from my eyes.. someone who doesn't know too much about the issue, I'd think the government would throw some tax breaks to these people.
Umm, airlines can't function without AIRPORTS, and AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL, and even the TSA. You could start a movement to raise other taxes to pay for air travel infrastructure, I suppose. Won't get far these days.

Add the FAA to that list too. When people travel, a whole host of government agencies are necessary (some more necessary than others; FAA = necessary, TSA = bloated useless agency).
It seem air travelers spend as much time complaining about fees and surcharges as they do flying might not be much of an exaggeration.
But now the airline industry wants you to add another complaint to that list: taxes.

And when a passegers gets pissed and calls the governement to complaing, that cost money also. heck it even cost the USA money to enforce the Passenger Bill of Rights.
