This.

I have a set of SE215s that are fantastic. The sound quality is excellent, but the ear buds have earplug like foam that expands and fits your ear canal perfectly to mute many ambient noises. A more expensive option is getting a mold taken of your ear canal and having custom earbuds built (like professional musicians use), but I'll go with my set of Shure buds.

And yes, Bose is outrageously overpriced for the quality. You can pay 1/2 as much and get as good a quality or you can pay the same for another brand (i.e. shure) and get superior quality.

You realize the two aren't even remotely the same? Bose headphones use ANR to reduce noise - canceling out more low freq noise. Your foam earbuds use PNR to cancel out more higher freq noise.

So you really can't compare them price wise. Like comparing a bicycle to a car. Of course the car is more expensive, it's much more complex.

I use an Audio-Technica Quietpoint ATH-ANC7. It isn't the best noise cancelling headphones available and neither does it have the best sound quality (40mm drivers), but it is inexpensive, works well and is way more comfortable than any earphone.

I like using, what is to me, the white noise of the plane to block out all the more annoying noises made by other passengers

My husband has a pair of the Bose QC15's. He's been pretty happy with them. I'm not sure how they compare to other headsets, but they are way better than the foam earplugs I wear.
