My family and I are excited to visit San Diego for 5 days in May. We have a 2.5 year old son and will use a car rental during our stay. Our plans are to visit SD Zoo, Sea World, Safari Park and a day at the beach (La Jolla or Ocean Beach?).
We will be out during most of the day for activities/lunch but will need to return by late afternoon for my son's daily nap. After he's up, we will head out to dinner. It would be great if we can walk to restaurants for dinner (but a short drive is fine as well). We are usually back home by 8pm to put him to bed.
What is the best neighborhood to stay in for our family? Gaslamp Quarter, North Park, Ocean Beach, La Jolla, Old Town, etc.?

Dated thread, but for 'next traveler'...
I would look to places near Balboa Park, definitely not downtown / Gaslight (With a toddler)
LaJolla is very nice but a bit far out. There is a lot to do near the park (including Old Town), you can come and go from accommodation as often as you might need, one of you can walk over to the Organ Concert, or a jog in the park or international village. (Sunday afternoons are eventful in Park)
Beach area is ok alternative if that is your form of relaxing.
We have kids, including a toddler and often stay by the Gaslight / Seaport Village area. The area is great for walking around, and the New Children's Museum is fantastic.
Why don't you stay at the Del? Centrally located and perfect for families.
