I've been to both. I liked Vietnam a lot better.

I've been to both and I share your reasoning. Be quick however, Vietnam is catching up with Thailand quick in terms of tourist overcrowding, sleeziness, middle-aged white expats that like to go whoring, and young unwashed Australian backpackers looking for cheap beer and weed.

Edit - oh hell, caught by the necroposters again. I guess since this is from 2012 the guy made his decision.

They are both quite scammy, but nothing a bit of experience and common sense can't overcome.

That said, Thailand for me. I love Vietnam as well but Thailand has better food and better infrastructure, they are both overrun with tourists now.

I would go to either one but I picked Thailand because I'm old & tired & I know my way around there & where to go, what to avoid, etc... If I get a burst of energy I would go to VN. They both are cheap & have great food... Actually the real place I would go to next is Penang!

Great food in both Vietnam and Thailand but, having been all over both countries and spend a fair amount of time in both, I give the edge to Vietnam for food - both for my individual tastes but also in the level of care, enthusiasm and importance that I perceived in food among the people making and serving it.

Thailand felt more spiritual and Vietnam, more grounded.

Thailand is easier and much more accessible, Vietnam feels somewhat more adventurous (although not nearly as difficult as many places and certainly not undiscovered).

For scams and related annoyances, I did not see a big difference in Thailand or Vietnam. Either way, not a big deal and easy to avoid. Never had a problem but did have some annoyances as everyone does. Someone on an earlier 2012 post mentioned that Cambodia is more scam-free. Definitely not my experience. Again, not a big deal and nothing to fear but some pretty elaborate (and disturbing) scams encountered there.

Anyway, it's not really worth trying to say whether Vietnam or Thailand is better. They are very different and both are well worth visiting.
