Where would you rather vacation and why?

I've been to both. I think I'd go back to Vietnam, fewer tourists, cheaper, nicer scenery IMO.

From what I've heard from other travelers and temporary residents in the region:

You'll always encounter rip-off artists and people working scams, but that such behavior is basically woven into the cultural fabric in Vietnam and it's hard to trust anyone; so if you want a Vietnam-like experience without having to evaluate the motives behind everyone's every move, go to Cambodia instead.

Or so I've been told.

It's pretty much the same in Cambodia, if not worse. I got personally conned by a real border official in Cambodia. Generally speaking there tend to be less of such people in Thailand.

I've seen pictures of Thailand's beaches and they look nice. I don't think there are any Komodo dragons hanging around. Whew. I know there are nice beaches called Pattaya and Phuket. I like the name of the last one, and calling it "F*** it."

Seriously, though neither Thai nor Vietnamese food interests me, so I wouldn't be going. Food is a large part of where I choose to go. And I wouldn't want to go to Thailand and look for McDonald's or an American steak house to take all my meals.

Best Italians food I've EVER HAD was in Thailand on the border of Burma in Pai. Even better than the Italian food I had in Italy. Pattaya and Phuket are over run with tourists, Thailand has many other smaller hidden beaches that are gems. You just have to dig harder to find how to get to them.

Would have to be Thailand. If I am choosing between a monarchy or a communist country - the monorchy wins. Besides, I love Thai food - and I can get Vietnamese food right here in the USA - from people who fled communist Vietnam.

You're absolutely right, hARRIER : I visited 3 Communist countries : former Yougoslavia , former GDR and Algeria- yuck! only Yougoslavia was somehow ok, but the least Communist of the 3.
I sweared NEVER to go to a Commie country again, whatever good publicity it receives from travellers and medias...
