Planning a vacation for Feburary...son & wife as well..we are tossing around Dominican Republic which is not even on my long list and Panama, at least there are many things to see in Panama and won't be stuck in resort 24/7.

Anyone been to Panama lately?? Should I be concerned with anything...safety??

Most of what you'll see in the DR isn't an AI resort ... unless, of course, that's where you're wanting to stay. There are many options.

I visited the DR in January 2012. Santo Domingo and Cabarete. Here's a link to some photos I've posted to online albums:

Santo Domingo Photos: Travel the world through Webshots photos!

Cabarete Photos: Travel the world through Webshots photos!

I've yet to visit Panama so I can't make a comparison.

I was in Panama with a couple of guys I knew at college. I loved it! They took me to the Pacific coast and we played all day. The water was like bathwater.

BTW, it rains every afternoon or early evening. You never have to water the grass, ever.

This was back before the military left so I don't know what any changes might have come. But I'll tell you, I loved it and I'd like to go back.

They have all the conveniences you might want, whether it's casinos or banking -- and there are a lot of big banks down there.

We were last traveling in Panama a few years ago, most of it is quite safe we got around taking local and long distance buses and never had a problem. That said, there are some parts of Panama City (like any large city) that are known to be a bit suspect but you're usually fine during the day and overall the city itself is quite safe. There is also a city called Colon on the carib side that isn't very safe but you really have no reason to go there so doesn't matter.

One can't say the climate in DR is more anything, Panama has so much altitude variation for such a small country that it is impossible to state a Panama climate other than fairly wet. There are towns in the mountains that have a cooler cloud forest climate and others on the beach that are jungle.

We just backpacking and staying at budget guesthouses so I can't help you with resorts or renting a car etc. but anything else feel to ask or PM me I'll do what I can to help.

Default Panama is SAFE

Relatively speaking, Panama is very safe. Ive never been to the DR, but there is SO much to do and see in Panama City, what with its extremely diverse populations and cultures.
Methinks the DR is not was all-encompassing as Panama... I'm just sayin'......

I'd be wary of those two countries, especially if you have a child with you.

Costa Rica has for years, collectively, gone after the eco traveler and there are some fabulous places to stay....not fancy hotels, just great eco lodges. It's gorgeous there and most everyone works with tourism, so they have a reason to maintain their status as a safe place to visit.

The government is STABLE there, an important note.
