Anyone been to Iceland? I have a few plans for a 6 week trip starting early Sep and am thinking of Iceland 1st week of Sep... do you think this is a good time to explore the country? Any tips to cut costs as Iceland seems like one of the most (if not the most) expensive country to travel! Some of the costs I am looking at are frankly shocking even compared to countries like Japan.

I've only been in the late spring.

It might be best to get there a little earlier as I expect it will be getting pretty cool. Many of the outlying hotels may be closing for the season (bad) but the remaining ones may have lower prices (good). I have the impression that out of Reykjavik there are homeowners who rent out rooms. This might be a good low-cost option but won't be something you can easily plan ahead for.

Once out of Reykjavik, or a few of the larger towns, Iceland is very sparsely populated. Services are very far between even along the ring road.

To "explore" you pretty much need a rental car, which will be quite expensive. That could be your biggest cost. Six weeks is a long time. By the way, apart from the ring road, a lot of the roads are unpaved.
