A hotel in Newcastle has replaced its copies of the traditional Gideon’s Bible in favour of an electronic version of the text.

From today, all 148 rooms at the Hotel Indigo will contain a Kindle e-reader pre-loaded with a copy of the Bible. The hotel is claiming to be the first in Britain to offer such a service.

Guests are also permitted to download a copy of any other religious text – to the value of £5 or less – during their stay. Regular fiction books can also be purchased, with the costs added to guests’ bills.

I never really understood the practice of providing a bible to guests. If the bible is that important to you, wouldn't you travel with your own?

The hotels do not provide the Bibles.
The Gideon organization does.
Why they still go along with it is a different subject

True, the Gideon organization is very active. I was surprised to find a Gideon bible at my hotel outside Mexico City a few years back during an extensive working stay, written in both Spanish and English, in two columns on each page, side-by-side. I found it very helpful to see exactly what our English version translated to in Spanish and it was also a comforting reminder that I wasn't that far from home, after all!

That's what I often wonder about as well. The number of people offended by the Bible in the drawer vs. the number of people who don't notice or care vs. the number of people that are expecting or want a Biblw with their hotel room...

You would think so , wouldn't you?

Just wonderng are their any counterparts to the Gideons for other religions? I can't recall encountering anything in any of the hotels I've stayed at abroad...

This is funny. If you're offended by the Bible, don't read it.

Well, I'd say I'd fall in the "don't care one way or another" catagory. I do find the Chick tracts I encounter from time to time to be pretty darn offensive though
