Like most forums, there are some really great posters who are very helpful and can give you some great answers.

You have some posters who know everything and will remind you of that.

Then, you have some flame-throwers.

They have some really good international forums. Their US boards are rather weak and dominated by a handful of posters.

Overall? Very good. Many super-knowledgeable people. But there are also some trolls. If you participate there by asking questions/advice you should be prepared to demonstrate you've already attempted to find the answer(s) to your question(s) by reviewing prior discussions, used the search feature, read the FAQs, surfed the www, etc. If not, you risk the possibility of being flamed for being lazy. But when it gets to the very specific destination and some other questions those branches are hard to beat for finding what you want/need to know. Some branches are more active than others.

The guidebooks can sometimes offer out-dated information, but still can be helpful.
As others have said, overall the Thorn Tree is pretty good but can be prickly. I've never looked at their USA section, guess I never needed to, I've used Tripadvisor instead.

TT is a bit more down-to-earth than some other sites such as Fodor's or Slow Travel.

For Europe, as a compromise, you could try Eurotrip. It was around long before the movie and the Transportation and Cheap Flights sections are especially good.
