Airports are usually the most expensive places to rent. Weekend rates usually less. You must have a major credit card with enough credit on it so they can block out an additional $400.

Thanks a lot for the opinions. So i see that renting a car one way is going to be expensive than the usual cases when drop off and pick up locations are same. But in my case i have to consider factors like IF i do not rent a car and still want to go to Hagerstown, MD from NYC then whether the cost that i will incur in other means of transport and the hassles i will have to face is worth it ?
Current scenario for me is..

Rent a car from NYC -> Visit Hershey's Chocolate World -> Reach Hagerstown -> Drop Off car

Now this is going to be expensive i know.

If i go for other means of transport then i might be doing one of the following...remember that we are 2 people so all tickets will be 2

NYC -> Some train -> Washington DC / Baltimore MD -> Cab/Taxi to Hagrestown (75 Miles) -> See Hershey's the next day or something by renting a car in Hagrestown and returning back there only

This is is what I FEEL might become the itenary if i do not take a rented car. Here the train or flight or bus whatever i take from NYC to BWI/Washington DC will have to buy 2 tickets for me and my wife.

For the one side rental, i plan to rent the car in morning from NYC and return at Hagerstown after like 12-15 Hours max.

A small update.

I checked priceline.com and the lowest TOTAL price i am getting for the cheapest option for picking the car at NYC and dropping off at Hagerstown airport 12 Hours later is around 170$
I know it looks super expensive. But i can do Hershey's here.

To check for an alternative, i tried Amtrak website and it gave me an option of Train + Bus and it costs me 97$ per ticket so it will be like 200$ for me as i have to get 2 tickets.

I shall try to update more here. You guys are really helpful.

Not necessarily.

Some car companies offer a higher daily rate in lieu of a drop-off charge. For example, I rented a car one way Des Moines - Rockford, IL with Alamo for $69+ taxes for a total of $83. While that was expensive for an 8 hour rental, it compared favorably to a $300 OW DSM-ORD flight or an extra 4-5 hours on a Megabus.

That's exactly what i am saying here. I am of the belief currently that if i take a rented car i have freedom of going to Hershey's (which i am going anyways from Hagerstown if not when going from NYC to Hagerstown) and reaching Hagerstown as against taking any other mode of transport where i will be forced to use multiple modes of transport and still i will have to take a rented car from Hagerstown to visit Hershey's which will incur additional costs.

Still evaluating, and yes most of the time these companies do not mention anything like "drop off fees" or anything, they just give daily rate of like 150 $ and all which is obviously higher compared to if anyone choose the drop off location as pick up.

Will be finalizing things after i call several car rental companies.

Maybe i;m missing something.
1. Your are flying into a NYCity area Airport
2. Will be doing something in NYC for X days.

You need to be in Hagerstown md when you finish? How long will you be in Hagerstown? Is part of this trip biz or is it all personal?

3. You will fly out of BWI

You need to plan 3-4 hours to get to Hershey PA from the NYC area. More if you take the 'slow' route thru amish area county. (plus stops), If you are going to hershey Park (theme park) you will need at least 8 hours there. If you are just going for the tour of the plant 2 hour (timmed ticket needed). If you do the tours of the Milton Hershey school plan 90-120 mins more.

Do it in 1 day will be hard. (drive to, see, drive back)

Suggested - Fly in to NYC area, do NYC stuffm take Amtrak from NYC to Baltmore MD, $98 for two, Get a rental car in Baltmore (NOT at the airport) , Most rental car company have the 'local' edition. (that do not have all the airport fees & Taxes on it). They will 'pick' you up, or leave it at a hotel for you. Drive from Baltmore to hershey .... do your hagerstown thing. then drive back to BWI drop car at airport, fly home. (most car rentals allow for dropping cars off within the same city with no drop off charge).

Ok this is how my itenary is... (Traveling from Dallas and have to see Niagara first and then reach NYC).

1. Be in NYC for 2 days
2. On day 3, Leave NYC for Hagrestown where we will be staying overnight at a relative's place.
3. Next day morning leave for Washington DC and stay there for a day or 2 (yet to decide).
4. Fly back to Dallas.

We are not interested in the Hershey's theme park. We want to see that chocolate factory (name ???) where they might be showing how chocolate is made and all that. I am yet to check what Hershey's Chocolate world has to offer but definitely do not want to do the theme park. Some 1-2 hour stuff.

Let me know if more information is required.

http://www.hersheys.com/chocolateworld/ = "Fake" Chocolate Plant, The big plant moves out of town Years ago. But they do 'make' some chocolate there,

Milton Hershey School = School

Since cost seem to be a major factor, I would take the train or bus to Baltmore or DC , pick up car there on day 3, drive out to Hershey, then to hagerstown, then down to DC, dump car, see DC, fly home (Washington Metro goes to BWI now Metro->Bus) Metro - Home page

misc - Niagara Falls, If you have passports, go over and look at fall from the Canada side, The view is much better.

Thanks guys...after doing some research, i think we are mostly dropping off Hershey's from the list and hence we will now mostly be traveling from NYC to Washington DC using bus or something.

Once again wanted to thank for having patience with my queries and answering them.
